If you are expecting a refund from the IRS, but it is taking longer than expected, you may be wondering where your refund is. Generally, refunds are issued within 21 days after an electronic tax return is filed or within 42 days after a paper return is mailed. However, there are some situations where the IRS may take longer to issue a refund, such as when a return needs further review, is incomplete, or is affected by identity theft or fraud. To check the status of your refund, you can use the Where’s My Refund tool on the IRS website or call an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center.

If your refund has been lost, stolen, or destroyed, you can file a claim online to request a replacement check if it has been more than 28 days from the date the IRS mailed your refund. You can also request a tax transcript from the IRS if you need information from a tax return you filed three years ago.

Residents of Maine and New Mexico will be able to receive a new relief payment starting in June 2022. However, it is not yet known exactly when the fourth stimulus check will be released in most states that are considering a fourth payment for their residents.
